Buy nowI'm using the QuickBooks Desktop. And this problem appears when I want to do the reconcile.
Nothing wrong with the account, but the "?" appear between the account number and account name.
And it makes all the account shows " *** is not in the Account list". What should I do?
I have tried the repair tool provided by Quickbook desktop, but it has no effect.
I appreciate you using the repair tool to fix your concern, @Owen_2. Let me share other ways to get rid of the question mark symbol on your Chart of Accounts (COA).
This special character (?) appearing on your COA is a sign of damage. To fix this, let's use the Rebuild Data tool to automatically fixes minor company file data issues.
Here's how:
If QuickBooks doesn't find any problems, click OK. Otherwise, select Rebuild Now again if QuickBooks finds an issue with your data. On condition the issue persists, you may use the QuickBooks File Doctor to fix your company file.
In addition to that, it may also appear with a Mismatch of Operating System language setting to the QB program. If you bought QuickBooks for the US, your Windows has to be set for region and language as US English.
Once everything is settled, you can proceed with reconciling your accounts in QuickBooks Desktop. This way, they would match your bank and credit card statements.
Let me know if you run other issues when managing your Chart of Accounts. I'll be happy to assist you and take a look at it. Keep safe and have a good one.
I check the region and language, both are US English.
And I try the Verify Data, no problem was found.
And I got no idea how to solve the problem with the question mark.
Thanks for getting back to us, @Owen_2.

Any working solutions for this?
The error appears only at the point when account numbers are switched on in Preferences
QB added the symbol (dot) between account number and account name, and this symbol is recognised incorrectly.
I tried to verify data and rebuild - no issues
I changed the locale to English (US) - the same story
I won't rest until the issue with your chart of accounts lists is fixed, @Spiridonov.
I can see that you did everything you could, I appreciate you sharing it with us here. To further help resolve this, let me provide additional troubleshooting steps.
We can start by resorting your Chart of Accounts (COA) lists. This process is usually used whenever you encounter odd behavior in any name lists on your account. Here's how:
Once done, close and reopen your company file. Then, check if you still encounter the same thing.
If the issue persists, I recommend reaching out to our Technical support team. When connected, you can request a screen-share session so they can further investigate the root cause of the problem.
Customizing your COA is a breeze in QBDT. The program allows you to add new accounts or numbers that fit your business. To get started, please visit this article: Work with the chart of accounts in QuickBooks Desktop.
Making sure your issue is resolved is also my success. If you have any follow-up questions about the steps I've provided above, please don't hesitate to reply. I'd be glad to hear again from you. Keep safe always.
Hi Divina,
I tried - no difference, still the same problem
I open the company which was set up much before - now it has the same problem.
So it's either one the latest update in QB or in Win11
Thank you
Sam
Good morning
Any other suggestions?
I've tried everything mentioned on this page.
Basically, it works fine without the account numbers; but with account numbers, it shows the error from the topic starter in any first use of it.
Probably, it's an issue with one of the system fonts upgraded to the wrong version or removed from Win11
Could you please specify which system font is used by QBDT? I have 2017 Pro version
Thank you
Sam

Solved
After trying several combination for regional/language/locale settings, I found this checkbox which created the problem
Win - Settings - Time&Language - Language&Region - Administrative Language Settings - Language for non-Unicode Programs - Change System Locale
And here UNCHECK "Use Unicode UTF-8 for worldwide language support"
Hope it helps
It indeed works for Win11! Thanks for sharing your experience!
Thanks so much. I wasted so much time on this nightmare until I found your post. Wish the company had known and advised.
Mine was unchecked in Windows 11, but the problem was solved by changing the related 'system locale' to English (United States)
