QBO to QBD Issues
I followed the instructions on exporting from QBO to QBD, updated the certificates as needed.
The migration tool starts, lets me select the qbxml file, creates the file but then it throws the error code
1009 - Internal Error: exception unknown.
When I open the created file, no data has been transferred. Can someone guide me on how to proceed.
I am using QB 2018 Premier Manufacturing and Whole Sale.

Let's get rid of the error so you can open the file in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT), RuthAnnR.
The error occurs when:
- QuickBooks isn’t running.
- No company file is open.
- An open window is preventing the connection.
What you need to do is:
- Exit and reopen QuickBooks.
- Sign in to your company file.
- Make sure there are no other windows open in QuickBooks.
If the same issue persists, you can completely uninstall QBDT using the Clean install process. It replaces your QuickBooks Desktop software and its installation files.
If you still see this error, get in touch with our Live Support Team so they can help move your data to QBDT.
Keep me posted if there's anything else you need by commenting below. I'm always right here to provide the information you need.

Utilize the trial license of QBD 2021 to convert your data. If you are able to open the converted file on it, you may purchase a 3rd party downgrade service to open the file on your QBD 2018.

I talked to 5 different people in QBO or QBD wasted 3 hours.
All of them were kicking the ball from QBO to QBD, and 3 people in QBO kicked around each other. IT IS A TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!!!!!!!!! I've been using this QBO->QBD->Turbo tax business for 3 years and this is the first time I think the company will be ruined by its customer service.
So far, no solutions.

Thank you for joining the thread, Rob.
I'm here to help you with moving your data from QuickBooks Online (QBO) to TurboTax.
The ability to directly import your QBO data to TurboTax is not yet available. Thus, they must be exported to QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) first. I'll guide you with the detailed process.
To get started, I recommend downloading a free trial of QBDT.
- Open this link: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/new-subscriptions/download-a-trial-of-quickbooks-d....
- Choose a version of QuickBooks you want to download.
- Take note of the license and product number, then get ready with the download and installation process.
After that, you need to export your QBO data to QBDT. You can check out these articles as your guide: Export and convert your QuickBooks Online data to QuickBooks Desktop.
Just in case you're getting issues with the process, you can connect with our Support Team for further assistance.
Once the data are available in QBDT, you can now proceed with exporting them to TurboTax. Here's an article you can read more about the instructions: How do I import QuickBooks data into TurboTax Business?.
On the other hand, you can check out these links for more hints while working with QuickBooks in the future:
If you have any other follow-up questions about moving QuickBooks data to TurboTax, please let me know by adding a comment below. I'm always here to help. Have a good one!

Utilize the trial version of a bookkeeping app to integrate your QBO account and get the TXF file. You don't need to install the trial license of QBD.

Thanks for joining this conversation, ddva.
I appreciate you following the steps shared by my colleagues in this thread. I'll make sure this is taken care of for you.
Since the issue persists after performing the clean install, I highly suggest contacting our Support team. They have tools such as screen-sharing (remote access) that can pull up your account in a secure environment and check the cause of this odd behavior. They can also perform other troubleshooting steps if necessary.
Here's how to reach them:
- In QBDT, go to the Help menu at the top.
- Select QuickBooks Desktop Help/Contact Us, then Contact Us.
- Give a brief description of your issue, then Continue.
- Sign in to your Intuit account and click Continue, then Continue with my account.
- We'll email you a single use code. Enter your code and tick Continue.
- Choose chat with us or Have us call you.
To check for our Support hours, you can refer to this article: Contact QuickBooks Desktop support.
In case you need it, I'll add this article that tackles managing and exporting your data from QuickBooks Online (QBO) to QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) for more information: Move your QuickBooks Online data to QuickBooks Desktop.
I also recommend visiting our website for tips and other resources you can use in the future: Self-help articles.
Please post again or leave a comment below if you have more questions about this or anything else. I'll be here to assist. Take care.

I'm having the exact same issues. I even have a paid subscription to BOTH QBO and QBDT Pro! I've tried to migrate my data just for TurboTax with both the 2022 Quickbooks edition and the 2023 Quickbooks edition. It keeps failing with the 1009 error. I've tried to uninstall, restart my laptop, reinstall, restart my laptop, then run the migration tool; and it still errors out.
I'd enter everything into TurboTax manually; but it's just so confusing.

Hi, dumplinDist.
I can see that this wasn't an easy process for you. Allow me to make it up to you by ensuring you eliminate the 1009 error.
After reinstalling QuickBooks Desktop, have you tried to update to the most recent version? The error is rectified by updating QB. If you haven't already, kindly check this article for detailed information: Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release.
If the issue remains, I would suggest contacting our QuickBooks Customer Care support to have this investigated further. You can refer to the steps given by my colleague above.

I just did a clean install of the 2023 edition R4_79 version, I ran all the updates (even let it fully run overnight), I restarted the application multiple times to ensure that there were no pending actions from the updates. I just tried to use the migration tool, and it failed at the exact spot with the 1009 error.

I'll work with you until we find a resolution, @Jay. Our team is committed to helping you resolve this issue quickly and efficiently.
I've checked our reports and haven't seen any reported cases of having trouble migrating the QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online. Have you tried following the suggestion above? The following are those:
- Exit and reopen QuickBooks. Then sign in to your company file.
- Make sure there are no other windows open in QuickBooks.
- Updating the QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release or version ( 2019 R17, 2020 R15, 2021 R10, and 2022 R5).
- Ensure your Total Target is less than 750,000 to migrate the data successfully. Just press Ctrl + 1 on your keyboard.
- If your QuickBooks version is 2018 or older, you can move your data to QuickBooks Online with an online tool.
- Using the clean install process
If the issue remains, I suggest contacting our QuickBooks Customer Care support to have this investigated further. You can refer to the steps given by my colleague above.

I'm getting the same exact error and it is always occurring at the same spot, for me its 80%. I am checking the logs but I don't see anything. Any help? I am able to open the company files but still transactions missing and i think its due to the fact that it just stopped at 80% and didn't finish. I know that even if it completes, your not going to get an identical match from QBO to QBD but the migration is just not completing all the way.
