I've got a bunch of solutions to ensure you can open your company files, @ruchjoanm.
The first thing you'll need to do is to make sure that your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) is updated to the latest release. This way, you'll have the recent features and fixes.
Second, you'll need to check their file types. Select the files with the .qbw extension at the end of their filenames. This is because you can't open other file formats, like backups (QBB) and portable (QBM) copies.
If they meet all the requisites and you're still unable to open them, let's identify if your company files or QuickBooks program itself is causing the issue. Here's how:
- Open the Windows Start menu, and type “File Explorer” into the search bar, and then open File Explorer.
- Look for the QuickBooks.exe file. It’s usually in your QuickBooks folder.
- Hold down CTRL on your keyboard and then double-click QuickBooks.exe. Don’t let go of CTRL until QuickBooks opens.
Then, open your company files again. If you can't, try a sample file through the Open a sample file drop-down. Remember that you'll have to open QBDT but not the company files.
If QuickBooks or the sample file don't open, or you get an error, the program is causing the issue. To help fix this, you can run the QuickBooks Tool Hub. Please browse through this article for the detailed steps: How to fix QuickBooks if it doesn’t open.
However, if the sample file opens normally, move on to Step 4. For more details, please refer to this resource: What to do if you can't open your company file. If you got the same outcome, proceed with the remaining steps outlined in the article above.
Also, for good practice, you can create a backup copy of your files. You may do this either manually or through the automatic process. This way, you can restore them anytime and prevent data loss in the future.
Feel free to get back to me if you have more questions, or if the issue persists. I'll be looking forward to your reply. Have a good one.

QB Ent 2020 dsktp
Hi,
Cldnt open QB today after our employees booted out. Normally I have ee re-start QB, if still prob, re-start pc. Or have all restart QB, or hv all restart pc's. if still problm, I restart server. Has always worked. But didn't work this time. Ran Tools, and the QB doctor, didn't work either.
Called QB tech spprt: they walked me thru got QB started (database was stopping). Thought it was fixed, still had probs. THEN noticed the D drive was in the Red: this won't allow QB start or backup. Cleaned out D drive, now all good! Hope this helps someone else! Don't forget QB Wkly bkup to USB drive and turn on your Intuit Bkup!

Let's perform some troubleshooting steps to access your company file, aah6559.
To let QuickBooks run smoothly, let's close other programs running in the background. Let's close all the processing programs in the End task menu. Just press together Ctrl + Shift+ Esc on the keyboard. Then, in the Task Manager window, select the QuickBooks file and choose End task. Once done, try opening the QuickBooks company file again.
If the same thing happens, try opening another company file to check if you're having a problem with only one file and not the program itself. Let me show you how:
- In your QuickBooks, go to the File menu at the top left.
- Choose Close Company.
- In the No Company Open window, click the drop-down arrow in the Open a sample file icon.
- Choose a sample file and click on it.
If it works, there may be a damaged data on the company file you've been working with. We can run the Rebuild Data tool is built-in to fix any company file data issues. Just follow the steps and detail in his article: Fix data damage on your QuickBooks Desktop company file.
Visit our QuickBooks Help Articles page for more insight s about managing your business in your software.
I'd like to know how you get on after trying the steps, as I want to ensure this is resolved for you. Feel free to reply to this post and I'll get back to you. Take care always.

Not to worry, @HLA-WA. I'll help you get that backup copy restored right away.
Are you getting any sort of error message when trying to load your backup? If your backup file is on an external device, you'll need to move it to your local hard drive first. Be sure to restore a backup (QBB) with a .qbb extension at the end of the filename.
Here's how to restore a backup copy:
- In QuickBooks, go to the File menu and select Open or Restore Company.
- Select Restore a backup copy and then Next.
- Choose Local Backup and then Next.
- Browse your computer for your backup company file. It should look like this: [Your company name].qbb.
- Select a folder to decide where to save your restored company file. Then select Open.
- If you open the backup in the same folder as your existing company file, you may overwrite your data. To avoid overwriting anything, you can rename your existing company file or the backup so the names are unique. Or you can save the backup in a completely separate folder.
- When you're ready, select Save. If you see any messages about possibly overwriting your data, select the option that best fits your needs. Don't overwrite anything unless you know you want to.
For more info about this process, refer to this article: Restore a backup of your company file.
If you see error messages about your password or assisted payroll data when restoring your backup file, check out this article on how to fix them: Fix backup company file issues in QuickBooks Desktop.
Furthermore, if you're having trouble opening your company file in QuickBooks Desktop, this article will ensure your success: What to do if you can't open your company file in QuickBooks Desktop.
Please come back and post about your results in restoring your backup copy. I'll be happy to help until it's resolved. Have a good one.

Not to worry, @Greatclips3. I'm here to help you through the steps to get this resolved so you can get back to business.
Error -6150, -1006 means your company file could have some issues that need repair. The CryptoWall virus and other malicious software can cause this error and prevent you from opening QuickBooks.
Follow these quick instructions so we can move forward on the next steps:
- Open the Windows Start Menu.
- Type “File Explorer” into search and open File Explorer.
- Search for and open your QuickBooks folder. It’s usually on your C: drive.
- Look for files that contain words like “decrypt” or “instructions” (.txt or .html).
If you see files that fit the description, reach out to your anti-virus provider. They can help you in removing the CryptoWall virus. Here’s documentation from Norton and McAfee for the next steps.
Otherwise, if you don't see any files with the description, your computer is fine. If you have a recent backup of your file, you can use it to restore your work.
If you continue to see the error message, move on to Step 3 in this article: Error 6150, -1006.
Keep me posted on your progress getting that error resolved. I'm determined to help you succeed.

Welcome and thanks for dropping by the Community, @Vistaplaza1.
I'm here to help ensure to isolate the error you're getting so you'll be able to open your company file, and so you can back to your business right away.
Let's process troubleshooting steps to resolve this issue, but before doing so let's make sure that your QuickBooks is updated to the latest release. Here's how:
- From the QuickBooks Help menu, select Update QuickBooks.
- On the Update QuickBooks window, go to the Update Now tab. You can ignore the table because you don't need to change anything.
- (Optional) Put a checkmark in the box Reset Update box to erase all previous update downloads. (Note: This may increase the amount of time needed for the update.)
- Select Get Updates.
- Restart QuickBooks. When prompted, accept the option to install the new release.
Since you already forgot your admin password and it has been a long time that you're unable to get into your account, I recommend using the password reset tool.
I'm also adding an article below about fixing issues when opening QuickBooks Desktop for reference: Learn how to fix issues when you can't open QuickBooks.
Let me know if you have other concerns or questions with your QBDT software, you can always get back to us anytime.
