When I resize individual register windows, they do not retain the same size when reopened. How do I make window sizing sticky?
I resize by dragging edges & corners & after closing the resized window, it doesn't open back up in the same size. Very annoying especially since I just spent $200 to upgrade.

In QuickBooks under the Window->Workspace menu do you have AutoSave checked? If you do it is supposed to remember the position and size of windows. I tried with a check register window and it is working for me.
Which register are you saving? (There are several different types)
The auto save information is using Apple's mechanism for autosave. The position data gets placed in the QuickBooks preference file. You may have a corrupt preference file - in that case try quitting QB and deleting your preference file. To delete the pref file do this:
1. Quit QuickBooks if it is running.
2. In the finder hold down the option key and click on Go->Library
3. In the Library window that opens double click on Preferences
4. Drag ALL files of the form com.intuit.quickbooksxxxx.plist to the trash (where xxxx is a year, like 2014 and 2013). Make sure you only delete these plists and make sure you get all of them.
5. Relaunch QuickBooks

There is a lot of additional functionality in the 2016 version - you may not need the new functionality but it is there.

The Window position saving is part of the Apple window APIs for the most part (there is special processing in QB for some of them, like the toolbar). In the plist each window has one that looks something like this:
NSWindow Frame 3D81DED3-573D-44D0-ACF6-92F1BA047D14_HomePageWindowFrame 996 564 1016 636 0 0 3008 1669
The numbers following the "frame" part are related to the window position. This comes from Apple's APIs - I'm not sure how the numbers are interpreted by the Window manager (though I probably could look it up).
Anyway, something is wrong, and yours aren't being saved. We did recently find a bug in the handling of the writing of the prefs in some theoretical instances - we've never actually encountered it. A fix for that should be in the next update. It _might_ have something to do with what you are seeing.
I don't know what version you are coming from. Performance should be better in 2016 than 2015 but there is a wide variance in data in different companies files and that can effect performance. Try running File->Utilities->Rebuild.
There are a large number of new features in 2016 if you are running Sierra. <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.qblittlesquare.com/2016/09/whats-new-quickbooks-mac-2016-r6/">http://www.qblittlesquare.c...>

It's a pleasure to have you here in the Community, dlharbin-tx.
Thank you for sharing your awesome insight about keeping the window size in QuickBooks.
For the benefit of all, allow me to elaborate the steps you provided regarding the QuickBooks Preferences.
To modify the Desktop View in QuickBooks Desktop:
- From the Edit menu, select Preferences.
- Click Desktop view in the left navigation menu.
- Choose the Multiple Windows option in the View section.
- Click OK to save the changes.
I've also attached a screenshot below showing where the Adjust Window Size menu is located.
Thank you again for your contributions and all you do for the QuickBooks family, be sure to let me know if there's anything I can help you with. Looking forward to hearing from you again, wishing you a lovely day.

Sadly this isn't unique to the OP. I've been looking for a solution to this since the last upgrade. No matter what 'save as' features I use (saving desktop etc) if I close a file and re-open it it reverts. Then all the windows are too big for my screen and won't resize unless I change the resolution.
These can't be isolated incidents.

Welcome back, @K9CrossTrain,
Thank you for reaching out to us here in the Community! I would be happy to shed some light on the situation.
When you modify the default settings of your Windows DPI and screen resolution, this will affect other programs. Since you're experiencing odd behaviors with your QuickBooks view, let's try troubleshooting your DPI settings. Here's how:
- Right-click the QuickBooks icon.
- Choose Properties.
- Go to the Compatibility tab.
- Choose Disable display scaling on high DPI settings.
- Click Apply then OK.
- Open QuickBooks and check if this works.
If not, I'd suggest following the steps on this article: QuickBooks Desktop Display Issues
Please let me know how it goes, @K9CrossTrain. I look forward to your reply so I can further assist you. Have a good one!

I'm having this same issue and have been having it since I bought QB2019 for my Mac. I did not upgrade.
As I read through this conversation, I got confused. It starts out focusing on the Mac version, but at some point, it looks like it switched into the Windows version. For example, there is no little box in the upper left corner w/ the minimize/maximize/close buttons being on the right. This is definitely not a Mac screen shot.
Yes, I'm very frustrated by this behavior of the windows. I have told QB to open all windows as tabs in 1 window and I generally have 2 windows when I open QB, and have to tell it to merge the windows again. I've also noticed that some things that I'm displaying in the window do change the size of the window. For example, the Vendor and Customer Centers make the window grow beyond the size of the screen. You can change its wide, but you can't change its height. If I click on a tab that is displaying a bank account, I can resize the window any way that I want to. But then if I click on the Vendor or Customer Center, BOOM!, I'm back to a window that's too big for the screen. This is extremely annoying! This doesn't make any sense, and Intuit should be able to fix it.

Hello RodWright,
I understand there has been a confusion with the answers. But, I'm here to help you out.
Let's start with the screen resolution. You can change QuickBooks's window size by going to the preference settings. Here's how:
- Click on Edit.
- Choose Preferences.
- In the Display section, adjust the screens resolution.
- Click on OK.
For merging windows permanently, that isn't possible. I will send feedback to our product developers about this.
If you have more questions, please let us know.

Hey GarlynGay,
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, once again you appear to be talking about the Windows version and I'm using the Mac version. There isn't a Preferences choice under Edit on the Mac version. On the Mac, you have to go to QuickBooks > Preferences. Once you get there, there is not a choice for Display. See the attached pic. Thanks for trying though. Any other ideas?

Thanks for getting back to us, RodWright.
It might be that you're using Tile Horizontally or Tile Vertically as your window type. That is why when you open another tab, the first tab will go back to its original screen. You'll have the option to change your window type.
To choose Cascade as your window type, just go to your WINDOW menu, then select Cascade.
Feel free to reach out to me if I can be of any help. I'm always around to help you.

Upthread, someone mentioned that this may be unique to the OPs machine. I just want to chime in (with the others) that it's not unique to their machine. In fact, if you look around on the internet, a lot of people complain about it.
I've been using quickbooks for probably 20 years, with 5 or 6 different versions (all QB Pro) and multiple machines and monitors over that span of time. Windows not remembering their size and location within the program has always been an issue.
I can set up a specific window (say, Invoices) just how I like it, set others (ie bill pay, check register) to the size and location that I want them and they may stay that way for a week or they may only last until I close and reopen them, but regardless, at some point they'll open in, what appears to be, a totally random size/position. Over the years, I've spent time with tech support, I've reset window sizes (Shift+Opening a window), I've deleted the preference files that contains the windows files and a handful of other things.
It's endlessly frustrating to then have to resize every single window, because often the default size is near unusable, just to have it not remember the new size.
It's clearly a bug in the software, I assume corrupting the file that contains this info, but it's been happening for a long, long time. I'm surprised it's not fixed yet.
PS, anyone want to take a guess at why, about half the time, I tell QB to email an invoice, it launches my email client (Thunderbird). I know I've seen other reports of that as well. It's not the end of the world, but it is annoying.

Thanks for trying to help, but again, I'm running QB for Mac. There isn't a Cascade option under Windows as you can see in the attached screen shot.

So, where would you go in the Mac version to do this? I've attached a screenshot of the Preference window on a Mac.

I would recommend contacting our phone or chat team about this scenario, RodWright. They can do a screen-sharing session to see your setup and investigate this further.
- Open this link: https://help.quickbooks.intuit.com/en_US/contact.
- If you're prompted to choose a product, select QuickBooks Windows for Mac.
- Click Search for something else, and enter a short detail of the scenario in the Ask us anything field.
- Scroll down and click the Get Phone Number button.
