Changing QuickBooks default browser to Chrome
When I use bank feeds (Chase), it is giving me a message that IE 11 will no longer be supported. How do I change the browser to Chrome within QB Desktop Pro 2018?

Hi there, pqjulie.
Currently, we still use Internet Explorer (IE) 11 (32-bit) for our online services in QuickBooks Desktop. We're aware that Microsoft has announced to stop supporting updates for this browser. However, we'll continue using it until we receive updates from our engineers.
To receive recent updates from QuickBooks, it would be best to set IE 11 as your default web browser (instead of using Chrome).
I have articles here about setting and verifying IE as a default browser:
- Use our built-in browser in QuickBooks Desktop
- Verify and Troubleshoot QuickBooks Desktop and Internet Explorer settings
Please let me know if you need anything else with Bank Feeds. I'm always here to help.

Hi there, @friendlyfc.
Thank you reaching out to the Community.
For now, we don't have any update from our engineering team. Rest assured, our engineering team is working hard to resolve this problem permanently.
Though, I still recommend using Internet Explorer for our online transactions in QuickBooks Desktop.
For the meantime, I suggest visiting our Blog site. This is where we share recent happenings and future developments, such as updates to newly added features. Here's the link: The QuickBooks Blog.
I also got an article for you that will help you more about setting Internet Explorer as a default web browser:
- Set Internet Explorer to be your default browser
-
Verify and Troubleshoot QuickBooks Desktop and Internet Explorer settings
Please let me know if you need anything else about QuickBooks. I'll be here to lend a hand. Have a great weekend!

It is ridiculous that Quickbooks Engineers have dragged their technology feet on converting to Chrome from IE. Problem surfaced in 2018 and it is 2021. Your users demand better upgrades in this department.

Any updates on this?
I would really prefer to set my own browser.
I just upgraded to 2021 and clicked on the payroll notice regarding a federal compliance issue needed by 7/31/21. Internet Explorer opened, but the article did not. I finally copied the link over to Chrome and got to see the page and information. This kind of 'workaround' is unprofessional. Please fix this.

We have officially reached the end of IE11. What is QB's proposed solution?
Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) desktop application retires on Windows 10 on June 15, 2022 (non-LTSC, non-Server) |
Today we announced that the future of Internet Explorer on Windows 10 is in Microsoft Edge. Internet Explorer mode (IE mode) provides legacy browser support within Microsoft Edge. Because of this, the IE11 desktop application will be retired on June 15, 2022. This means that the IE11 desktop application will no longer be supported and afterwards will redirect to Microsoft Edge if a user tries to access it. Internet Explorer 11 desktop application
How this will affect your organization: If your organization has legacy sites and apps with IE dependencies, you will need to set up IE mode so that users can access them through Microsoft Edge. Microsoft Edge, with Internet Explorer mode, is the only browser with built-in compatibility for legacy IE-based sites and apps. It also gives your organization world-class compatibility with a dual-engine advantage:
IE mode support follows the lifecycle of Windows Client, Server, and IoT releases at least through 2029. Additionally, Microsoft will give one year notice to deprecate the IE mode experience in-market when the time comes. Reminder: This new announcement builds on our previous one. As communicated in MC220490 (August ’20), Microsoft 365 apps and services will no longer support IE11 after August 17, 2021; after this date, Microsoft 365 apps and services will be unable to connect, or have a degraded feature experience, when accessed on IE11. Other Microsoft products and services are also ending support for IE11. For a full list, please see our Microsoft apps and services to end support page. What you need to do to prepare: To prepare, we recommend setting up Microsoft Edge in your organization. If your organization needs legacy browser support, you will want to set up IE mode in Microsoft Edge.

You're not reading this notice from Microsoft closely enough. It's not just that Microsoft won't be updating IE11--IE11 is being DISABLED in Windows 10 (the dominant operating system currently). As of June 15, QB internal browser will be COMPLETELY inoperable. This represents an urgent matter for QB developers.

Thanks for joining us here in the Community, @CO CPA.
Let me provide additional insights about the browser that works best for online banking in QuickBooks Desktop.
QuickBooks recommends using Internet Explorer (IE) when downloading bank transactions from the bank to the system. It is also the default browser when accessing internet and other online services, LMT223.
For those users whose bank's website doesn't support IE, you have the option to bring the transactions manually. You can prepare a web connect (.QBO) file from your bank's website, then import the transactions to QBDT, so they become available in your bank feeds.
For your reference about importing your transactions, you can check this article: Import web connect (.qbo) files.
I'm also adding here a link that you can visit about how bank feeds work in QBDT: Download Bank Feed transactions in QuickBooks Desktop.
Leave a comment below if you have any other questions. I'm always here available to help. Have a good day!

Let me help share information about the default browser used in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT), @adamg4671.
As of the moment, there isn't yet an integrated way to change and use Microsoft Edge with QBDT. And we're also unable to determine the exact turnaround time as to when this option will occur. It's best to let our developers know about your request by sending feedback. Let me show you how.
- Go to Help.
- Select Send Feedback Online.
- Click Product Suggestion.
- Under Product Area, select Other.
- Enter a few words describing how you wanted to use Microsoft Edge since some of the links you've visited are not working while using Internet Explorer.
- Select Send Feedback.
- Click Close Window.
I'm adding this article to keep your browser up-to-date while waiting for the coming updates: Upgrade Internet Explorer to open QuickBooks Desktop.
If you have any other related concerns with the QuickBooks browser, please let me know in the comments below. I'll be here to answer all of them. Take care and stay safe!

This is completely unacceptable! Fix the problem! I can't access my bank on-line and is causing a lot of additional work. No one is using IE 11 and for a large company you are not keeping up with what is going on for your customers. This is bad business!!!!!

Unbelievable!! We just contacted technical support because our bank is not allowing use of Internet Explorer for web connect from Quick Books since IE is no longer supported by MS as of 6/15/2022. Technical support indicated that it was our bank's issue and it took us a long frustrating conversation to get technical support to understand that IE is not going to be utilized by any companies since MS itself is no longer supporting it.
We have to now use a workaround with additional steps, which defeats the purpose of having it all integrated in one software. We didn't buy QB with these features to have to have additional steps added and features unusable because they are using an antiquated browser that is no longer supported.
Now we are having issues with online bill pay through Melio and they told us we should be using Chrome! Really?!?! I'd love to use Chrome!
How can a company as big a Intuit still have IE as the integrated web browser when Microsoft itself no longer supporting IE?
I have used QuickBooks for 20 years and have loved it up until the past few years. This issue is going to be the one that drives us to another vendor unless someone on here knows of a solutions that technical support is unaware of.

They say if you have updated to the latest release version, you don't need to run IE again.

Thanks for joining this thread, @bthomason.
Fiat Lux - ASIA is absolutely right. When you update your QuickBooks to the latest version, you don't have to run IE again.
We have a built-in browser that replaces Internet Explorer 11. All supported QuickBooks Desktop versions will start to use our custom browser. It’s reliable and will include critical security updates.
For more information about this, you can open and browse this resource for your reference: Use our built-in browser in QuickBooks Desktop.
Meanwhile, I'll be adding this great Community resource in case you've got other QuickBooks concerns such as setting up payments, managing your income and expenses, running reports, etc. Please refer to this article for more details: Community help articles.
