I'm here to provide clarifications about what happens when your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) expires, bdalley.
The level of access you'll have to your files without renewing your subscription depends on the specific version of QBDT you're using. Different editions and years of QBDT have varying policies regarding file access after subscription expiration.
If you purchased QBDT 2021 or earlier with a one-time license, you'll always have access to your company file without needing to renew. These versions use a traditional model where you own the software outright. However, be aware that you won't get any security updates as these versions are no longer supported.
For QBDT 2022 users, you'll need to keep your subscription active to access your company file.
As for QBDT 2023, you can view your company file in read-only mode for 365 days after your subscription ends, but you won't be able to make any changes during this period.
We're here to assist you with any additional questions or concerns about managing your subscription. Feel free to reply to this thread, and we'll respond promptly with the help you need.

QB has continually bombarded me with “latest updates” which are actually new QB software programs with subscriptions. It has been locking up my computer when I try to stop it from downloading AUTOMATICALLY. I always try to exit the prompt, hit “control/alt/del” to end the task or close down windows when I receive the unsolicited prompts and when that doesn’t work, I respond “Remind me Later.” No other way to free my computer. QBooks eventually starts downloading regardless of having no permission to do so. It happened to me a couple weeks ago, and I assumed the tech support person was able to stop the cycle. Yesterday it proceed to take over my computer again and downloaded something but turned off comp before installing. It battled me for 10 min… I video taped it. Also received a letter that QB was upgrading me again (without permission) to a $999/yr subscription starting Jan 2025. I do not use payroll, online banking or any other feature requiring internet. Sole employee of a small s-corp What can I do?
