The original instructions were incorrect.

When you are creating the Fixed Asset in the software, ensure you add your serial number then copy it.

Look to the top right of the dialog box to see Custom Fields, select it and voila, you'll find Serial Number.  Paste your serial number there and it will show up on your report.
