Hi there, jstraub.

The steps provided by my colleague, RenjolynC, are for QuickBooks Desktop. If you'd like to have a hierarchical view your Chart of Accounts in QuickBooks Online, currently there isn't a feature which makes that possible.

I can certainly understand how this could be useful for yourself/others and have submitted a feature request about it to our Product Development Team so it can be considered in future updates.

As a workaround, you can use your Account List report and customize it in Excel.

Here's how:

  1. In the left navigation bar, go to Reports.
  2. Enter "Account List" in the Find report by name search field, then choose Account List.
  3. Use your Sort ▼ drop-down menu and select a Sort by and Sort in option.
  4. Click Customize.
  5. Change the preferences on your Customize report screen as necessary.
  6. Hit Run report.

Once you've produced it, you'll be able to export a copy as an Excel Spreadsheet (XMLS) file by clicking your Export icon, then selecting Export to Excel

Now you can arrange the order and sequence of your accounts on the report hierarchically. If you're missing data when viewing it in Excel, it's because protected view is active. You'll need to turn on Enable Editing to view all details.

I've included a couple resources with more information about customizing reports and exporting them as XMLS files that may come in handy moving forward:

Please feel more than welcome to reach out anytime if there's additional questions. Have a lovely day!
