Intuit want us online with QBO or subscription based. (hence logging in to confirm you are paid up)

Neither of which is for me. 

Call me old fashioned, but I want to buy my software once, then update it when I need to. Run it for years even... In a small non-profit we do not need new features every year. Just something reliable.

I guess that is not who they want to make money from.

Until I find something better, I stay with my desktop version, and port 443 blocked at firewall for the Quickbooks exe file.
