Quickbooks is forcing their long standing loyal customers like myself to go to a yearly subscription/renewal
Simply put, they want you switching to QB Online. You can use QB Desktop with a non subscription license + a stand alone payroll app to lower your cost. You will register payroll expenses as JE in QB Desktop manually.
