To my knowledge, no Quickbooks version after 2020 will run with an expired subscription.  And, of course, if you could find a 2020, it is unsupported, although a clean install will get all the updates there are.  It will not run Intuit payroll.  I'm using the one I bought new.  I do manual payroll and enter via memorized transactions.  Since it requires an Intuit account, I live in constant fear that Intuit may (illegally but who could afford to challenge) cause it to stop working one day.
