As a (mostly ex) software developer... the 'software as a service' (SAAS) model has been inevitable for a long time.  Nobody can blame developers for moving to subscriptions in an age where quality, security and regulatory compliance require nearly constant code management and updates.  The problem is nobody running Quickbooks Desktop signed up for SAAS and it was scummy for Intuit to use underhanded methods to drag resistant customers to the new model while repeatedly and blatantly lying about the reason.
