If you're using QuickBooks Desktop and you're unable to open a company file while no other company files are opened, I'd recommend performing some of our recommended troubleshooting steps for these types of scenarios.

 

Initially, Intuit recommends making sure your books are up-to-date with the latest release.

 

Here's how:
 

  1. In your top menu bar, go to Help, Update QuickBooks Desktop, then click Update Now.
  2. Hit Get Updates.
  3. When the update finishes, close and reopen QuickBooks. Once you're asked to install your update, select Yes.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions when your installation's finished.

 

Next, you'll want to confirm the file you're trying to open is a company file (.QBW). Other types of files, such as backups (.QBB) and portable files (.QBM) can't be opened the same way.

 

If you're still unable to open it, you'll want to make sure your file isn't compressed or encrypted:
 

  1. Right-click the company file and choose Properties.
  2. Click Advanced.
  3. If your Compress or Encrypt options are turned on, untick their checkboxes to turn them off.
  4. Select OK.

If you're working with QuickBooks Online, I'd recommend troubleshooting your browser initially. In the event that doesn't solve it, you'll want to confirm you meet each of our system requirements for the product.

 

Regardless of which product you're using, if you've performed each of our troubleshooting processes for your product and the file still wont open, you'll want to get in touch with our Customer Care team. They'll be able to pull up your account in a secure environment, conduct further research, and create an investigation ticket if necessary.
