You don't have to have a server to run multi-user mode. However, you'll need to have a host customer (where the file is stored). As long as it's set up correctly on a client computer, then you shouldn't have any issues.
Moreover, there are some scenarios that can cause for the QuickBooks multi-user mode to not work. The following are some reasons behind it:
- The hosting settings aren't properly configured.
- Firewall or antivirus software is not allowing communication between user computers.
- The database server is unable to open the company file.
You’ll want to make sure that the QuickBooks Database Server is installed on your server computer. Install the same version of the Server Manager as is the QuickBooks version you are using. This way, your company files will be shared with other computers over your network.
Once done, perform the QuickBooks Multi-User Setup solution stepwise. To fix the mode working error, firstly you need to set hosting to local files by following these steps:
- Open QuickBooks.
- Press F2 to open and come on the product info.
- There’s local server information. Check and ensure that hosting is for local files.
After, you'll need to restart QuickBooks Database Server Manager. Then scan your folder using it to access your file over the network.
