I ended up going with Gusto Payroll and have not had any issues all year. Everything was simple and their customer service reached out to me to offer guidance to run my first payroll. 
The whole point of paying for a payroll service is to save time and for convenience. If QUickBooks cannot offer that much, they should not be charging for a service they cannot provide.
