If QuickBooks is freezing, there could be several possible causes:

  • Your company name may be too long
  • You may have corruption on your hard drive
  • You may have a damaged Windows operating system
  • You may have a damaged or missing QBWUSER.INI file
  • Your program files or QuickBooks Desktop installation may be damaged

There's a few troubleshooting processes you can try to see if QuickBooks will stop freezing. Initially, I'd recommend running Quick Fix my Program from the QuickBooks Tool Hub. This can help fix common errors. It also shuts down any open background processes QuickBooks uses and runs a quick repair.

Here's how:

  1. Close QuickBooks.

  2. Make sure you download the most recent version (1.4.0.0) of the QuickBooks Tool Hub
  3. Save your file somewhere you can easily locate it, like the Downloads folder or Desktop area. For the best experience, Intuit recommends using Tool Hub on A 64-bit Windows 10 system.
  4. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksToolHub.exe).
  5. Follow your on-screen steps to install and agree to the program's terms and conditions.
  6. Once the installation finishes, double-click your QuickBooks Tool Hub icon on the Desktop screen to open it. If you can't find its icon, do a search in Windows for "QuickBooks Tool Hub" and choose the program.
  7. In your QuickBooks Tool Hub, click Program Problems.
  8. Select Quick Fix my Program.
  9. Start QuickBooks Desktop, open the data file, and see if you can go to Paystubs or Send Forms without QuickBooks freezing.

If your books continue freezing after completing the troubleshooting steps above, there's a couple more processes you can try. Review Solution 2 and Solution 3 in our Fix issues when QuickBooks has stopped working article.

In the event you've performed all of the troubleshooting processes mentioned above, but QuickBooks is still freezing, you'll want to continue getting in touch with our Customer Care team. They'll be able to pull up your account in a secure environment, conduct further research with you, and create an investigation ticket if necessary.
