How are more people not asking this?  Wouldn't 99 percent of users have last name first for their customer list?  Who on earth sorts by a customer's first name?  This makes absolutely no sense.  And this is not a workaround - it's just the instructions on how to change each single customer.  Separately.  Every time you set up a new customer.  Mind-boggling.
