Sorry...   I  realize I wasn't clear.  You will NOT loose any transactions.

 

My question was do you not just want to keep the old Acct with the old Acct# for reference.  If so, then just create a new Acct and make the original one Inactive (once the data is old enough that it is just historical data).  This way you would have two Accounts for say Rent.  Once Acct would have the Orig# and at some point when that data is Historical, you make it Inactive.  The second Rent Acct would have the new number and you would use it going forward.  (Or pending how many entries, you may go move all of 2022 into this new Acct and the old/orig one stops 12/31/21.

 

By editing the Account you're just changing the Acct#, but all of the existing transactions remain.  But now the new and the old transactions are under the new Acct#.  Which I think is what you were asking to do.
