There are certain information that triggers the password requirement, Geoff Kav.

Once you enter Personal Identifiable Information (PII) in your company file, it will require you to create a password the next time you open it. This feature is used to protect your data, your customers, vendors, and employees' information from fraudsters and identity thieves.

At least one of the following PII can trigger the password requirement:

  • The Credit Card Protection feature is enabled (Company Customers Credit Card Protection)
  • Employee and Company Social Security Number
  • Company EIN
  • Company Bank Details (Routing Number, Account Number)
  • Company Credit Card Acct. Number
  • Fixed Assets Account Number
  • Other Assets Account Number
  • Other Current Assets Account Number
  • Loan/Other Current Liability Account Number
  • Long Term Liability Account Number
  • Vendor Tax ID
  • Vendor Account No.
  • Employee's Birth Date (QuickBooks 2018 versions only)

The password is nominated by the Admin user of the company file. However, it sounds like you have no idea about it. Did someone access your file and create the password? If you can remember, you can use the Automated Password Reset Tool to regain access to your file.

On the other hand, you can enable to option to stay logged in for 90 days when you can open your file.

Let us know if you still can't access your file. We'll answer to our reply, whoever is available.
