Thanks for the quick reply.
You were close. If I opened the existing estimate that had been created before the project... the project name wasn't in the customer pull down. Now if I clicked MORE->COPY only then did the project name appear in the customer pull down.
This seems like a bit of a workaround and really not the way it should work, but it works.
