Other questions

I received a call today from [removed].   Same thing, stating that our subscription was up for renewal and our card on file was not going through.   I stated that our subscription was paid in full.   "Steve" was persistent stating that it was not the software subscription he was calling about, but the "bi-annual fee" for the full service support package that goes with it.

To combat these types of scams, I tell them I have to investigate the status of our payment and to give me their number so that I can call them back.   Usually, this will be enough and most scammers will hang up.

The scammer who called today is VERY sophisticated and gave me a bogus tech support number of [removed].   I called it just to investigate and they have this down to a science - including muzak while you are on hold.  You get redirected back to the operator who then transfers you again.   My guess the extension number is their internal code that someone who is calling back for that extension may be on to them and you are directed to a voicemailbox of "Steve Miller".   This way they may get folks foolish enough to leave their card information in a voicemail.

Folks, please do not give out ANY information to anyone who calls you that you do not know.
