Just to add to the party:
If you set up a Virtual Machine in Windows and once running turn off the internet connection, then install QB Desktop in that VM, activate it, it seems to run absolutely fine.
Don'y know if it will die after a certain number of uses, but suppose you would just need to reinstall within VM. Press F2 when in QB to see licence details and uses.
