Hi tony61-

Are you trying to access the Employees tab on the app or are you using a browser? If so, can you please let me know the browser you are using?

Hey Christine. I am using the app on a MacBook Pro. Chrome is my default browser. I have also tried switching to Safari. Both browsers have cookies enabled.

Hi Tony61-

Ah, so just to confirm, you've followed the steps below for each browser, and you are still unable to access the Employees tab on both browsers?

For Google Chrome:

    1. Select the 3 vertical dots in the top right hand corner
  1. Select Settings then  Advance
  2. Under Privacy and Security select Content Settings
  3. Select Cookies andTurn off  Block third-party cookies

For Safari:

  1. Select the Gear Icon in the top right hand corner
  2. Select Preferences  then Privacy
  3. Next, to Block Cookies tick Never

Keep me posted.

Thanks tony61-

I'd recommend calling in for additional troubleshooting, we are working through accessibility issues with the app, but the above workaround to unblock cookies and clearing the history/cache should allow access via browser.

Our agents via phone would be better able to identify what might be the issue using screenshare and further probing on the issue. Follow the steps below for a callback if that is preferred:

  1. In your QuickBooks Online, click the Help menu in the upper-right corner.
  2. Select Contact us and enter the details of your concern.
  3. Click Let's talk and choose Chat or Get a callback.
  4. Enter the needed information.

Hi Paul,

There is a known issue with the Employees tab when going through the App.

Whilst the engineers are working on a fix for this, you can access the Employees tab via a web browser (Chrome or FireFox preferably).

Hi Kylie80-

As mentioned above we are aware of the issue and we are still working through the fix for accessing the Employees tab on the app. A new version should be released early next week restoring access to the Employees tab.

Hold tight for now, and use a browser like Chrome or Firefox in the meantime. Please also, if you're able, give us a call and provide your account details so we can record you as being impacted by the issue. This way we can also create a case and update you when the fix has been released. See below on how to get in touch.

  1. In your QuickBooks Online, click the Help menu in the upper-right corner.
  2. Select Contact us and enter the details of your concern.
  3. Click Let's talk and choose Chat or Get a callback.
  4. Enter the needed information.

Reply here with any questions.

Hi MediaContentSolutions,

You'll want to update your operating system (Safari) so you can access your employees' tab or use Google Chrome. However, if you're still unable to access the tab, please follow the steps below for another option,

  1. Click on Safari at top left, select Preferences,
  2. Choose Advanced.
  3. Show Develop menu in the menu bar.
  4. Tick the checkbox to enable.
  5. Once done, you'll be able to see the Develop option in the menu bar at the top of the browser.
  6. Click Develop.
  7. In the Develop menu, select USER AGENT. Choose Google chrome – macOS.
  8. Once done, reload the Employees tab.

I have tried, on QB Essentials

* iPhone site on Chrome/Safari

* iPhone app [doesn't have employees tab]

* iPad app [doesn't have employees tab]

* iPad site on Chrome/Safari

* macOS on Chrome

* macOS on Safari

* macOS on Safari spoofing as Chrome macOS

Have allowed every single cookie and ad tracker through.

And I still get an "something unexpected happened... error"

Is the bug fixed?

Welcome to this thread, @clearly_not_an_accountant. I appreciate you for checking us about the investigation update.

Our engineers have found a fix for this issue and are currently available in the Beta version of the web app. We expect this fix to be released early next week.

In this regard, I'd suggest you update your app to ensure that you can access payroll without any further issues. Should you wish to try the beta version of the desktop app, visit the macOS link: https://http-download.intuit.com/http.intuit/CMO/qbo_client_web_dev/static/release/mac/latest/QuickB...

Hi I have just bought a new MacBook Air 2019 and am having trouble in Safari accessing employees after ensuring the cookies aren't blocked. I can access Employees on Firefox though. Why is this?

Thanks for joining in this conversation, @LizzyKate. It could be that your Operating System (OS) isn't updated, this is why you're unable to access employees using Safari.

That being said, I'd recommend updating your OS to retain access to Payroll using Safari. Check this link as your guide: How to update the software on your Mac - Apple Support

Hi Leia,

Access issues to the Employee section are usually resolved by fixing a setting in the app or browser and/or clearing the cache. If you are using the desktop app, we'd first suggest clearing the app's cache by first selecting the Help menu, then Reset App Data. You can also try uninstalling and reinstalling the app if this does not resolve the problem.

If you are logging in via a browser, you need to be sure third party cookies are enabled in your browser. We do recommend using Chrome for the best experience with QuickBooks Online and you can refer here for a guide on cookie management in Chrome. You can quickly enable cookies and clear the cache by:

  1. Select the 3 vertical dots in the top right hand corner of the browser, then select Settings.
  2. Under Privacy and Security select Cookies and other site data.
  3. Ensure the option selected is 'Allow all cookies'.
  4. Click 'back' on the browser and select Clear browsing data. Ensure the only option selected is 'Cached images and files', then Clear data.

As you've mentioned it's a MacBook, see here for a guide on cookie management in Safari as well. We'd also suggest disabling the 'Prevent cross-site- tracking' feature:

  1. In the Safari app, choose the Safari menu, then Preferences.
  2. Click Privacy, and ensure Prevent cross-site tracking is not selected.
  3. Ensure block all cookies is not selected.

If you are making any changes to browser settings or clearing your cache, ensure once you have saved them that you close and reopen the browser. If the above suggestions do not resolve your issue, I would suggest you reach out to our Support Team directly on 1800 046 038 for further troubleshooting so they can assist in getting you access to payroll.

In case anyone else is still getting this problem, QB support guided me to a fix that worked for me.  On the Help menu, select Reset App Data.
Not sure exactly what it does but my Employees tab is working again.

I spoke too soon. I'm continuing to get this problem at seemingly random times.  On each occasion I can "Reset App Data" requiring resigning in and re-setting up my tabs.
I wish someone had a proper fix for this.

Hi dfurn,

I'm sorry to hear you're still experiencing this issue. If the steps provided to you are working as more of a workaround rather than an actual fix, we would suggest reaching out to the Support Team once more on 1800 046 038 to advise them of this. They can record your particular account details and escalate this as required to determine the root cause of the issue and how to resolve this.

This is still happening in July 2023.

I believe QB has enough time to fix it. This is not free software we pay every month for the service.

It only works if the cross-tracking is off. This a problem as users do not want cross-tracking!

Hi philip20,

Thanks for joining the thread. QuickBooks Online Payroll is an add-on service and is powered by Employment Hero (our payroll provider) which is why you need to uncheck Prevent cross-site tracking on your browser settings.

Here's how to enable third party cookies in Safari:

  1. Go to the Safari menu, then select Preferences.
  2. Click Privacy, and ensure Prevent cross-site tracking and the Block all cookies option is not selected.

On the other hand, you can also use different browser like Google Chrome or Firefox to access your Employees tab.
