You need to determine which computer you want to have the Company File stored on and which computer will be the "2nd" one accessing the data.  The two biggest issues I see are Security and Workload on the computer.  Those two are followed closely by how powerful the computers are (and disk space - which is easily fixable).

  • If you have security issues for your data (Company File) then you need to have the Primary machine be the one that is in a locked office or otherwise more secure.  If that is not an issue....
  • Next consideration is how the machines are used.  If one of the machines is used heavily and always  has multiple programs running, then consider using the other machine to be the Primary QBs machine.  Especially if that other machine is used for basic email, word processing, etc. and is never really has a heavy processing load.
  • Finally, even if one of the machines is used heavily, if the other machine is an older, slower processor, slower speed on the drive, etc. and both machines are used about the same as far as open programs, etc.  Then be sure to make the Primary QBs machine the fastest newest one.

Two other notes:

  • The two machines really should be on a WIRED network, not WiFi.
  • You can also share a folder on the Secondary machine and set up where the QBs Backup goes to that other machine.  Then if something happens to the Primary QBs machine, you actually have the file on the Secondary machine.  Within a few minutes you could have your QBs file open (as of the last backup) on what was the Secondary machine.
    • It will mess up the sharing setup, but you can recover and then follow the original steps again once you have two computers again.
