Buy nowIt would be nice to be able to delete old inactive items. We have imported item list from 10-15 years ago and changed some of the items and subitems to better categorize and it would be nice to get rid of all the old inactive custom items codes we had...can this be done. ?
If you are using QB Desktop, you can purchase a 3rd party condense service to remove unused item list.
Let me emphasize the details about being able to delete inactive items in QuickBooks Online (QBO), @Quality856.
Currently, the option to delete inactive items is unavailable. However, please know that making an item inactive is already equivalent to deleting it in the program.
In the meantime, I recommend submitting a feature request so our dedicated software engineers can carefully review your suggestion and potentially incorporate it into our future product implementations. To do that:
Additionally, you may want to utilize categories in QBO to gain better insights into your sales and inventory when running reports.

I love the feedback of requesting the option to delete inventory items be made to the software engineers is STILL being suggested as this post started in 2019!
If you're lookin to completely delete your inventory, including all items in QuickBooks, it's a bit more involved than just clicking a button. First, let’s make sure this is really what ya want cuz once gone, it can't be recovered. If you're sure, you'll need to inactivate each item. Unfortunately, there's no built-in feature to mass delete items in QuickBooks, so it's gotta be done one by one, which can be pretty tedious.
Here's how you do it: Go to your Lists menu and choose item list. Right-click on each item you wanna remove and select Delete Item. If QuickBooks says an item is used in transactions and can't be deleted, instead choose Make Item Inactive.
But here’s the thing. In large inventories, this manual process can be a pain (been there!). To speed things up, try using QuickBooks' Excel import/export option. Export your item list, mark them for deletion, and re-import it. You can also explore third-party apps that might automate parts of this, integrating directly with QuickBooks for bulk editing tasks.
Always back up your company file before making these kinds of changes. Wouldn't want to lose more data than intended. If you’re feelin overwhelmed, it might help to get a consultant who can guide you through the process or even set up some automation tools to stop future headaches.
