Get 50% OFF QuickBooks for 3 months*
Buy nowWhen I open Quickbooks, a warning pops up "You must download and install the latest payroll update before you can process payroll forms" The only option is to click "OK" When I do that, the error pops up again and, when I click "OK" again, Quickbooks shuts down. There is no payroll subscription so there is no need to download updates. I recently upgraded to Windows 11, if that matters.

If QuickBooks is crashing and displaying an error code while you're using your books, it may be caused by issues with the computer itself, or by how QuickBooks interacts with your system.
Errors you might see include:
Initially, I'd recommend making sure your books are up-to-date with their latest release.
Here's how:
If QuickBooks continues displaying an error message and crashing after confirming your books are up-to-date, you can also try troubleshooting with the QuickBooks Tool Hub and your Verify/Rebuild utilities.
In the event you've tried all of the troubleshooting mentioned above, but are still encountering the issue, I'd recommend getting in touch with our Customer Care team. They'll be able to pull up your account in a secure environment, conduct further research with you, and create an investigation ticket if necessary.
I've also included a detailed resource about QuickBooks crashing which may come in handy moving forward: QuickBooks closes unexpectedly (crashes with or without an error)
Please feel welcome to send a reply if there's any additional questions. Have a wonderful Monday!
Try opening the sample file. Did you encounter the same error message?
The sample file opens fine. I've run all available updates and run the File Doctor. Still getting the same 'install payroll updates' message and then Unrecoverable error 14878 09264.
Run the Verify/Rebuild Data utility. Any outstanding error message?
Thanks for your help. The problem seems to be with my new computer as I was able to open 2019 on another computer without issue. Going to try reinstalling QBs. Thanks again!
