Getting the Most out of QuickBooks
Updated July 20, 2022 07:42 AM - last edited August 29, 2022 11:49 AM
There's still a misconception that QuickBooks Online Payroll is only a full-service payroll solution, requiring Intuit QuickBooks to pay and file for you. This is not the case! While QuickBooks Core, Premium, and Elite were designed as full-service payroll products, we've upgraded them to give you more control over how your payroll taxes and forms are paid and filed.
With QuickBooks Online Payroll Core, Premium and Elite either:
- QuickBooks can pay and file your payroll taxes and forms
- You can pay and file your payroll taxes and forms through our system
- You can pay and file your payroll taxes and forms outside our system and then just record that they’re done in our system
Three very different options - all to give you the flexibility and control you want.
You even can change your option if you decide you’d like us to do it or you want to take control.
To see what your current payroll taxes & forms paying and filing status is, or to change it:
- Log into your QuickBooks Online Payroll Core, Premium or Elite account
- Click on the “Settings” gear icon in the upper right corner
- Go to the row that says “Taxes and forms”
- Click on the pencil edit icon to see more information or change your selection
On the "Taxes and forms" row, if you see:
| “Automated taxes and forms” Intuit QuickBooks will pay and file for you |
|
“I’ll initiate payments and filing using QuickBooks” |
|
“I’ll pay and file the right agencies through their website or by mail” |
Here’s how to view and change your taxes and forms setting and you can watch me do it in the video below.
Which payroll taxes and forms are paid and filed depends on which payroll product you’re using.
If Automated taxes and form on, Quickbooks Online Payroll will pay and file:
QuickBooks Online Payroll: Core
- Federal payroll taxes and forms
- State payroll taxes and forms
QuickBooks Online Payroll: Premium and Elite
- Federal payroll taxes and forms
- State payroll taxes and forms
- Local employer/employee payroll taxes and forms. This currently includes over 6,500 and is growing fast as we add customers who require additional ones! Attached is a list of some of the local taxes that QuickBooks Online Payroll currently pays and files for our customers who have “Taxes and forms” as “ON” and are fully set up. Click on the tiny download icon to view the list of some of the local taxes we support.
If you set it so that QuickBooks is paying and filing for you, be sure to check the Payroll Overview page for any “To dos” that we need you to do before we can pay and file for you.
*You have to pay and file the below local employee, and payroll expense taxes:
