Why are some of the sales in my profit and loss report services when I didn't record any because I don't provide a service?

Also, suddenly all of my blank invoices and sales receipts have a section for service date and all of my products have disappeared.

Why are some of the sales in my profit and loss report services when I didn't record any because I don't provide a service?

Welcome to the Community space, @alison.

Let me provide information and help you with your profit and loss report services concerns. Also, with the sudden blank invoices and sales receipts with a section for service date, all your products have disappeared in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

A Profit and Loss (P&L) report shows the net profit or loss based on a business's revenues and expenses over a specific period. The report, usually prepared monthly or quarterly, is used to track a business's total revenue and expenses in a specific period. If there are sales in the report but the business does not provide a service, it is possible that the sales are from the sale of products or other sources of income.

If you're seeing a "Sales" entry on your profit and loss report for services that you didn't record, it could be due to several potential reasons:

  1. Miscellaneous Income: Check if any income from non-service-related sources, like a one-time rental income, interest income, or other miscellaneous sources, might have been incorrectly categorized under "Sales."
  2. Incorrect Categorization: Review your income or expense transactions to ensure that they are accurately categorized. It's possible that a transaction intended for a different account was inadvertently categorized as "Sales."
  3. Automatic entry that is inaccurately attributing the income to "Sales." This might be related to how transactions are imported or recorded from other systems or platforms.
  4. Unintentional Entries: It's also possible that erroneous entries were made, leading to the inclusion of service sales that you didn't actually provide.

To address this issue, carefully review your individual transactions and their corresponding categories to identify any misclassifications or erroneous entries. Additionally, cross-reference your financial records to ensure that all transactions are accurately captured.

Moreover, for your second concern about sudden blank invoices and sales receipts with a section for service date. It's also likely that the browser cache is stored for a long period of time already, which causes the browser to behave strangely, I suggest performing some basic troubleshooting steps to make sure that you clear your browser's cache and temporary internet files first. For instructions, see Clear cache and cookies to fix issues when using QuickBooks Online. Also, for sales receipts, have a section for service date; I suggest viewing this article: Customizing Invoices Within QuickBooks Online.
