Buy nowThanks for posting here in the Community, and for sharing the complete details of your concern. I'll share some information about how to file your 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC forms, @KSfranklin.
QuickBooks Desktop can help you prepare your 1099s from the info you already have in the program. But when it's time to file you'll have to import your data to Tax1099, then file the form from there. May I what issues or challenges you've encountered when filing the form?
Form 1099-NEC will only replace Form 1099-MISC for reporting non-employee compensation (in Box 7), shifting the role of the 1099-MISC for reporting all other types of compensation.
The 1099-NEC is specifically for reporting non-employee compensation, whereas the 1099-MISC is for a variety of other types of payments, such as rent and royalties. So, if you only made non-employee compensation payments to an individual, the 1099-NEC can replace the need to file a 1099-MISC. However, if you made other types of payments to the individual, you may still need to file a 1099-MISC for those payments.
The 1099-NEC is now used to report independent contractor income. But the 1099-MISC form is still around, it's just used to report miscellaneous income such as rent or payments to an attorney. Although the 1099-MISC is still in use, contractor payments made in 2020 and beyond will be reported on the form 1099-NEC.
Again, it depends on the type of payment or compensation. Starting in tax year 2020, qualifying non-employee compensation payments will be reported on Form 1099-NEC, instead of on Form 1099-MISC. However, the 1099-MISC will still be used for reporting other types of payments, such as rents and royalties, but non-employee compensation payments should now be reported on the 1099-NEC.
