Tips for Converting from Online to Desktop
Good Afternoon - Has anyone recently converted from Quickbooks Online to Desktop? Any tips you can send my way would be greatly appreciated. A few facts about us:
- We do not have inventory
- We utilize a 3rd party payroll provider
- Customer base is tax exempt
- We don't use Purchase Orders
- We don't use Quotes
Thanks for any tips or assistance anyone can provide!

Hello, @kari.vandermaas.
Before converting to QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT), make sure to have the latest version of QBDT and an Internet Explorer 11 installed.
To export and convert your QBO to QBDT:
- Set up Internet Explorer so you can import everything smoothly.
- Go to your QBDT account and right-click the QBDT icon and select Run as administrator.
- Log in to your QBO account and prepare to export your QBO data from the Gear icon (⚙).
- After you finished exporting your data, check if it was exported correctly by running the Profit and Loss report on an Accrual basis both in QBDT and QBO.
See this article for detailed guidance: Export and convert your QuickBooks Online data to QuickBooks Desktop.
To know more about how your data was converted, check the following article: Limitations when you convert from QuickBooks Online to QuickBooks Desktop.
I’m always here if you need further help with converting your data. Keep safe and have a wonderful day!

Thank you for your feedback. I was also hoping other users could provide their real world feedback and tips. We are holding off on converting back to Desktop until we can be back in our office. Anyone else have tips, feedback, pros, cons, etc... they can share with me? I am all ears (or eyes ;)). Thanks!
