Hello there, @Mark9000.

The PS036 error appears when QuickBooks Desktop can't download the necessary payroll updates. This issue is often caused by:

  • Incorrect internet connection settings.
  • A firewall setting that blocks payroll updates in QuickBooks Desktop.
  • Damaged file in the CPS folder.

To resolve the error, follow the steps outlined below.

First, let's make sure your payroll service is correctly activated. This will force QuickBooks to download the latest updates.

Here's how:

  1. Close all company files and restart your computer.
  2. In QuickBooks, go to Employees, select My Payroll Service, then click Manage Service Key.
  3. Confirm your status is Active.
  4. Click on Edit to verify the service key number. If it is incorrect, please make the necessary corrections.
  5. Select Next, uncheck the Open Payroll Setup box, and then select Finish.

This process will download the entire payroll update.

If the error persists, proceed to Step 2. Register and update your QuickBooks Desktop. It is essential to have the most up-to-date security measures and software.

Here's how to check if your software is registered:

  1. Press F2 on your keyboard to open Product Information.
  2. In addition to the license number, please verify that it indicates Activated.
  3. If it doesn’t say Activated, register your QuickBooks Desktop.
  4. Make sure you have the latest QuickBooks Desktop release and download the most recent tax table release.

If the error persists after these steps, refer to the detailed guide: Fix PSXXX errors when downloading payroll updates.
