Yes, @billhdz.

I'm here to provide details on your concern regarding the compatibility of QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) for Mac 2021 on OS Sonoma.

Intuit released updates for QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) for Mac 2021 in October 2023, ensuring compatibility with macOS Sonoma. If you have installed QuickBooks Mac 2021 R13.3 or a later version, it will work with Sonoma. However, we recommend consulting an IT expert to address potential conflicts with your current OS setup.

I'll be providing this article if you want to check out what's new about the latest version of QBDT for Mac: What's new in QuickBooks Mac Plus 2024.

Other questions

Thanks for circling back to this thread, @billhdz. While QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) for Mac 2024 and 2021 are similar in core functionalities, it's important to note that the 2021 version, being older, may not be supported on newer Mac operating systems. Allow me to discuss this further.

As technology advances, new versions of operating systems are released, featuring improved functionality and enhanced security. To remain compatible and benefit from these enhancements, applications like QuickBooks Desktop require regular updates.

Since QBDT 2021 is an older and discontinued version, it may no longer receive updates or support from QuickBooks. This could result in compatibility issues with newer operating systems and unaddressed security vulnerabilities. For more details, consider checking out this article: QuickBooks Desktop service discontinuation policy.

To help avoid issues and ensure that your financial information are secured, it's recommended to upgrade to the latest version, such as QBDT Mac 2024. This newer version offers ongoing support and updates, ensuring that your software functions optimally with the most recent advancements. Additionally, upgrading will help ensure that your financial data stays safe and protected, allowing you to benefit from the latest functionalities to streamline your accounting tasks.

Moreover, here's an article you can read and save if you want guidance in converting your QBDT company file: Convert or upgrade your QuickBooks Desktop and Quicken company files.

I understand, but all I need to know right now is that Quickbooks desktop for Mac 2021 works well and it’s compatible with MacOS Sonoma..  Is that the case?

I don’t use any of the online features of quickbooks or any payroll.

@billhdz

None of the Intuit employees on this site will give you any assurance of the functionality of QB 2021 on your computer. I also do not process payroll or use any import features. It worked perfectly for me on Sonoma and continues to work perfectly for me on Sequoia 15.1.1. If you are hesitant, open your QB, check for updates, and update if any are available. Next, do a Time Machine backup of your Mac on an external drive and then disconnect the drive. Update your OS to Sonoma, open QB, and check for updates again. Finally, open QB and see if it is working for you. If it is not, restore your Time Machine backup to your Mac to revert to the previous state.

One more question:

I found this page: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/help-article/update-products/release-notes-quickbo...

that mentions Release 13 (R13) 3/15/23 for QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2021.

It says:
"Calendar and Reminders Updated Mac OS Calendar and Reminders support for Mac OS version 12 (Monterey) and Mac OS version 13 (Ventura).", but it doesn't mention macOS Sonoma.

Is that because macOS Sonoma is compatible with QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2021and it did not need any updates for Sonoma?

This is what I am going to be doing...

I am making sure that my QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2021 is fully up to date with updates.

Then, I will upgrade my macOS to Sonoma, and once that's done,  I will start QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2021 on my computer again to continue using QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2021 under macOS Sonoma.

I shouldn't need to activate my Quickbooks again since it's on my same computer.  That should work fine, correct?

Thanks

Other questions

The article's information pertains to Operating Systems that were not compatible with QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2021 at the time of its release. Allow me to provide more context, billhdz.

Sonoma is not included in the list because it hasn't been launched when the R13 maintenance release was made available. Specifically, the R13 update was published on March 15, 2023, while Sonoma was only released in September of that year.

In October 2023, a patch made QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2021 compatible with Sonoma.

You are also correct that you do not need to reactivate QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2021 since you are using the same computer. The system requires reactivation or registration only if it is installed on a different machine, a clean uninstall and reinstall was performed, or the registration file was deleted.

I have QB 2019 for mac, I updated to Mac Sequoia.  Use it very basically - GL & Memorized Transactions ( deposits & Checks) no bank downloads. I continue to get QB Crasher when /i enter more than one line on a check or deposit.  I DO NOT want to move to QB On line- which Intuit says is my only option. Or us a 3rd party company from Asia. Fiat Lux.

Anyone have a solution?

@Spiderterp I've been running my 2021 quickbooks on Sequoia 15.1.1 as well for a long time now. Just curious if you are still on that version or are on the current version of Sequoia 15.3.2 now? If so is it still working fine?

Hi

I am on 15.3.2 Sequoia. ?And QB Desktop 2019

It runs ok, until I have a check that has multiple line expenses or Deposit with multiple.

Then I get the QB crasher.

I have been just entering  just one line and saving then going back to change the amount & enter the other lines.

I just do not want to go to QB online.  I have 2 small businesses & it is a lot of money!

I understand that the crashing issues you're experiencing can be challenging, randie4620. Let's work together on this and get QuickBooks running smoothly for you again.

One potential cause of the issue might be that your QuickBooks Desktop for Mac is not running the most recent version. Please ensure to back up your QuickBooks company file before performing any troubleshooting steps to prevent data loss.

I suggest ensuring that your QuickBooks Desktop for Mac is updated to the latest version. Updates often contain bug fixes that could resolve the crashing issue. For the in-product update process, you can follow these steps:

  1. From the QuickBooks▼ dropdown, select Check for QuickBooks Updates.
  2. If a newer version is available, select Install Update.
  3. When prompted, select Install and Relaunch.
  4. When the update is complete, QuickBooks for Mac automatically opens.

Here's an article on how to keep QuickBooks for Mac up-to-date so you always have the latest features and fixes: Update QuickBooks for Mac to the latest release.

Moreover, you might also want to check this article that can guide you effectively in reconciling your accounts: Reconcile accounts in QuickBooks for Mac.

@randie4620 & @Spiderterp  Thanks for the responses. I've been holding off going to the most current version until I got confirmation it's working on 15.3.2 I don't use any of the online banking or payroll so no issues there. I'll do the update now. Thanks again guys!

Other questions

Hi there, @SAO1.

It isn't advisable to update your desktop to Sequoia if you are using QuickBooks for Mac 2020 version because the said version doesn't support it.

Currently, These are the only supported QB for Mac versions for Sequoia OS as of now:

  • QuickBooks Mac 2024 R5.1
  • QuickBooks Mac 2023 R7.2
  • QuickBooks Mac 2022 R12

However, you can use a previous later version of Sequoia so that your QB Mac will work properly.

On the other hand, you can visit this article to update your QB for Mac to the latest release: Update QuickBooks for Mac to the latest release.

Additionally, you can visit this article for future reference to learn how to import your data into QuickBooks for Mac: Import data into QuickBooks for Mac.

You can always return to this thread for further assistance.

My only recommendation is to do a Time Machine backup before you update, disconnect the hard drive or device you just backed up to, and then update your system. After the update, check to see if your QB is working. If it is not, immediately restore back to the Time Machine backup and decide how you want to go about your accounting needs. You could freeze that laptop and use it for accounting purposes only or some other solution.

The advisors here in this thread will only provide you with the currently supported version answers, which all require a subscription instead of a one time license fee.

@SAO1

You can still run QBD 2020 on Sequoia with some minor random issues. If the problem is annoying, you can use the QBD 2022 trial version as a workaround.
