I have set up for MTD, have confirmation from HMRC, have set up QuickBooks. The problem is QuickBooks continually states not connected to HMRC. Does anyone know why?

Hello burgateengineer,
Did you go through all steps needed to connect QuickBooks to HMRC? Where does it state that it is not connected?
Thanks,
Talia

Hi yes I went through all the steps correctly as far as I understand.
On the VAT page (upper right) I get an amber circled exclamation mark stating 'Refresh your VAT centre to stay connected with HMRC.'
When I click the 'Refresh Now' button I then get a red circled exclamation mark stating:
We can’t connect to HMRC right now
Let’s check a few things out to get you back on track.
When I click learn more it just lists the things I have already done.
Thanks
Matt

Hi there, burngateengineer.
Thanks for joining the Intuit Community. Allow me to share some information about the message you encountered when filing the VAT return.
We received reports that some customers are getting an error when connecting to HRMC. Our engineers are diligently working towards finding a solution.
To make sure you'll get looped into any updates about the progress, I recommend you reach out to our QuickBooks Care Team. One of our specialists will gather your information in a secure environment and add you to the notification list.
You’ll receive an email once there’s an update about the issue. The most up to date contact information can be found here:
- Go to Help at the top, then click on the Contact Us link.
- In the How can we help? window, enter contact support in the field box.
- Select Let’s talk.
- Choose a way to connect with us.
- Select Chat or Call us.
While waiting for the resolution, submit the tax return using this URL: /app/tax/mtd?stepId=validateStep. This way, you can submit the tax form.
Once the permanent fix is made available, rest assured, I’ll let you know by updating this thread.
That should get you in the right direction.
I appreciate your patience while we look into this. If there’s anything else I can help you with, please know I’m just a comment away. Have a good one.

on the left side of the screen (VAT enabled)
on the right side,
1, as soon go on to TAXes it shows for one second "Great Work …."
then
2, "Refrest your VAT centre to stay connected to HMRC"
below that it says "The connection to HMRC has stopped working"
then "Refresh now"
I did that and ….
3."We can't connect to HMRC right now"
if look at open returns "Status" is "Blocked"

Hello Wolfen,
Just to let you know, I have edited your reply to remove your personal information from the public post. I was looking to check whether the gateway login you have entered is 100% set up for the VAT registration number - rather than needing to see those numbers.
Thanks,
Talia

Hello Wolfen,
Would you be able to go to your account & settings > advanced and then disconnect MTD, once you have done this reconnect MTD and then let us know if you still get the same message.
Thanks,
Talia

Thanks for joining the thread, atki,
Let me provide information about submitting VAT return to HMRC for MTD.
Upon authorizing QuickBooks to interact with HMRC, it takes approximately 72 hours after you have opted in to MTD on HMRC's website. For the meantime, you’ll have to wait for that specific period.
Moreover, in order to submit VAT return to HMRC for MTD, make sure to follow the steps below:
To enable MTD in QuickBooks, here's what you'll need to do:
- Click Taxes in the left navigation menu.
- Click on Let's go button at the upper right hand.
Once done, to authorise QuickBooks to interact with HMRC, follow these steps:
- Click Continue to sign in.
- Enter your HMRC credentials to sign in.
- Click on Grant authority to continue.
- Once the authorisation has been given, you will receive a 'You're connected to HMRC message as below, then click Continue.
- When the process has been completed, click on Take a look.
That's it! Once you're able to complete this process, you can now submit VAT return for MTD through QuickBooks.
Note- Please check the date of your VAT period as you can not file before the period ends it will block you from doing that. Also please check the VAT number is entered correctly in Quickbooks in the VAT settings and that you have the correct gateway details for the connection. By logging into HMRC gateway with those details.
For more detailed steps, here's a great resource that you can check: Authorise QuickBooks to interact with HMRC - MTD for small businesses.
I'd appreciate if you can update me on how it goes. I'm always here to help. Have a great day!

Hi
I've spoken to HMRC and the MTD team at Quickbooks and both have been very helpful. I had set up everything correctly and am connected to HMRC correctly, the error that come up as Blocked is because I'm not due my next VAT period till the end of June, so after this I've been assured that when I refresh it will connect correctly and show as open.
Thanks again for the info.

Thanks,
Useful piece of info, I'd clicked through and set-up, receiving info from HMRC Digital we were all good to go but then QuickBooks failed to connect. Might be useful if this info was actually displayed in QB surely!

I had exactly this problem and tried all of the other fixes such as disconnecting then reconnecting non of which worked.
In the end, I rang Quickbooks who solved the problem in a couple of minutes.
In the Taxes section, click Edit VAT on the top right and check your VAT number does NOT have any spaces in it. If it does, remove the spaces and it will hopefully fix the connection issue.
It worked for me and I managed to submit my VAT return at long last
