Reports - where is the critically important "Memo" field????

Just transferred from Desktop to Online and am totally stunned that there is no option to include the absolutely critical "Memo" field in custom reports.  As a result, all the 30 or 40 custom reports developed in Desktop are now rendered useless.  My first thought is that this is simply a programmer mistake due to lack of understanding how Memo fields work.  Memo entries are probably one of the most fundamental fields in Quickbook. Almost every sale or expense has a Memo attached to it.  A person's name for a deposit.  An aircraft tail number for a membership sale.  The memo column, of course, continues to be available in all transactions fields.

But open a customs report and the only available option is some thing called "Memo/Description" which does not populate with existing Memo entires but rather with downloaded bank transactions comments.

After having spend hours on the phone with support that varied from a genuine effort to help to totally useless, including a suggestion to upgrade, I am at my wits end.  I did try an upgrade to Essentials which supposedly offered one custom field but not one that is remotely associated with reports.

I believe this to be a fundmental screwup by programmers that has eliminated one of the most critically useful features of Quickbooks.  Can someone please send the programmers back to the table to separate "Memo" from "Description" and restore the value of Quickbooks Online for thousands of subscribers.

Currently, the option to separate the Memo and Description columns is unavailable, Jvparker.

We truly value your feedback and appreciate you sharing your business needs with us.

That said, I encourage you to submit a feature request to our development team to express your desired functionality for separating these columns.

Here's how:

  1. Log in to your QuickBooks account.

@Jvparker "I believe this to be a fundmental screwup by programmers that has eliminated one of the most critically useful features of Quickbooks. "

Welcome to Quickbooks Online! One glance through this message board will show that this will NOT be the only vital feature available in Quickbooks Desktop that is completely eliminated Online.

Our recommendation is to go back to Desktop immediately OR get your books together and migrate to another accounting service like Xero as soon as possible. Even Online features that you find useful right now are set to be removed soon as they roll out a new "modern view" in the next few weeks. So please, don't get comfortable. I cannot tell you how much time our team has wasted in the last year trying to develop new workarounds as Quickbooks routinely removes essential features with their "updates." Get out while you can.

What version of QBO are you using - Simple Start?  I use QB Online Plus and have no difficulty getting data entered in the memo field of an invoice, bill, expense, bank deposit, etc., to show on a custom report.  The only exception I've found is when drilling down on an income account from the P&L.

To clarify, the data entered in the memo field of an invoice, bill, expense, bank deposit, etc., shows in the 'Memo/Description' field in QB Online Plus.

@Rainflurry does this 'Memo/Description' field populate the information previously added in the 'Memo' field from Quickbooks Desktop? Because that's what the issue is here.

There is vital information you're able to capture in Quickbooks Desktop that does not transfer to Online's reporting.
