Buy nowHi All,
I can kill a running process (program) in both Linux and Windows from the command line. It cuts the legs off the running process and is anything but graceful. In Linux, I can set a "SIGHUP" and depending on how the programs is written and reacts to it, the program will shutdown gracefully. Unfortunately, QB is not written for Linux.
Is there a way in Windows to send an external command from the command line to a running QB Desktop to ask it to gracefully shutdown?
Many thanks,-T
Will the WM_CLOSE message work used by (taskkill /IM process.exe) work?
Hello, @ToddAndMargo.
Thank you for detailing the process of adding commands and citing a program as an example. For safe shutdown, it's best to close the program properly or end the task temporarily.
You can close QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) in two ways. First, click the X button in the upper right corner, and then it will automatically open the last company file upon relaunch. Second, you can go to the File menu to select Close Company, then go back to File to Exit. This method allows switching company files or users upon reopening.
Alternatively, we can hard stop QuickBooks from the Task Manager to kill the main program task and its related background processes. Here's how to do that:

Speaking of command, consider using keyboard shortcuts to navigate around QuickBooks more efficiently.
Since your concern also relates to Windows, I recommend contacting Microsoft's customer support for personalized assistance. They can help you troubleshoot the Windows side of the command line, permissions, or system diagnostics.
If you need further help navigating the program, add a response below. We're always here to address them.
Please answer the question I actually asked.
